4 Steps to Overcome Overwhelm, Part 1

Yikes! Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK! How did we get here so quickly. We are entering the Holiday Season, and we all know what that means. In a flash, our To Do list has quadrupled.

Can you relate?

How can we avoid

or - if you are already there -

overcome the overwhelm?

Last week I had the privilege to speak at an amazing Women’s Fall Dinner at one of our local churches. This event was done right! The fall décor was beautiful, the food was scrumptious, and the place was packed with 250 women. When Emily reached out to me, she specifically requested I talk about How to Overcome the Overwhelm. As I prepared, God gave me a passage and 4 things we are to do. So… over the next few weeks I want to share these 4 things with you so you can – in Jesus’ name – defeat the overwhelm and be present for the holidays ahead.

Ready?

Join me in Ephesians 2…

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
— Ephesians 2:1-10 (NKJV)

So today – what God wants you to do is…

1.     Remember Who you Are!

For those of us who have surrendered our life to Christ, we are a Daughter of the King and He has made us alive in Him. We are no longer of this world; we have been made new. Our life should look different than that of those who do not know Him. We are already seated in the heavenly places and His promises are ours. We are His workmanship, His masterpiece, and He has a plan for us. His plan does not include walking around overwhelmed. 😉

What does that mean for you?

So, as Daughters of the King, we should recognize that we do not need the world’s approval because God has approved us. There is no need to people please. Let’s all say that again. There is no need to people please! We should not be seeking to have the best décor, the yummiest meal, or to give the best presents. We are not in a contest.

As His child, we should “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) “These things” refer to what we shall eat, drink, and wear – the daily needs we have. God is telling us to not worry about that, but to seek Him. He is our provider.

This year, engage Jesus in all your holiday “To Do’s”. Walk with Him and talk with Him throughout this super busy season. Ask Him to guide your holiday décor, help you make your menu, protect your finances. Honor Him in every detail. AW Tozer says, “When God is exalted to His proper place in our life, a thousand problems are solved all at once.” Put Him first and all the other things will simplify.

But what if our overwhelm doesn’t stem from our To Do List, but from the pain we carry?

We may feel the pain of loss, the pain of loneliness, the pain of unmet expectations, or the pain of unanswered prayers. What do we do with this? Well, we have a good, good Father and His word tells us to “cast all your care on Him, for He cares for you”. (1 Peter 5:7) As God’s girls we are to present all our worries, anxieties, and problems to God in order to let Him handle them. They are not ours to carry.

From the end of the earth I will cry to You,When my heart is overwhelmed;Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
— Psalm 61:2

I am praying for you! I pray that from this day forward you will remember who you are and live your life accordingly. You are His. His promises are yours.

This year, embrace an attitude of gratitude, love others well, and celebrate the birth of your Savior like never before!

Love,

Pam
