Does Life Have Purpose?

Do you know this is the most googled question? People are online searching for the purpose of life. It is scary to think that their search may lead them to misinformation and mixed messages, instead of leading them to the truth.

What do you believe? Do you believe we are just here to be happy and gather up as much enjoyment as possible during our time on earth? Or do you believe that life has a purpose? And if so, do you believe that each one of us has a purpose?

The purpose of life can only be shared with us by the Creator of this life. Why would we look anywhere other than the Bible to find who it is we should become, to discover what it is we should do, and to question what our specific purpose might be?

This question is not new. Humans have been asking it since the beginning of time. Here is what some who asked have shared…

King Solomon said that life is all about honoring God with our thoughts and our life by keeping His commandments.

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.  God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

King David shared an eternal perspective, living for what was to come. He shared that full satisfaction would come when he woke up in heaven with Jesus.

Because I am righteous, I will see you. When I awake, I will see you face to face and be satisfied. Psalm 17:15

Asaph shared that a relationship with God matters above everything else in life. Without that relationship, there was no purpose to our life.

But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do. Psalm 73:28

Paul tells us that he once did not believe. But after his encounter with God, he realized that all the things he did apart from God was not more valuable than the trash. (Some translations say manure.)

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.  Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. Philippians 3:7-9

So… we can conclude and live out our God given purpose. –

Glorify God by honoring Him and obeying Him,

keeping our eyes focused on eternity with Him,

and growing to know Him intimately.

We are to follow His purpose for our life,

which leads us into joy and the abundant life

Jesus came to offer.

Based on this, let’s ask ourselves… As believers, What should we stop doing? What should we start doing?

What should we stop doing?

  • We should stop conforming – copying the selfish and corrupt patterns of the world. (Romans 12:1-2)

  • We should stop sitting on the throne and being the Lord of our own life. We will surely fail and cause destruction.

  • We should stop finding our identity in our failures, our successes, and the opinions of others.

  • We should stop being complacent and living as if God’s word does not matter

What should we start doing?·

  •  We should start letting God change the way we think and transform us into who He created us to become. (Romans 12:1-2)

  • We should start fully submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Jesus is Lord (We don’t make Him Lord). Because He is Lord, we should start humbly submitting all of me to all of Him. He is to be Lord over our daily actions, our finances, our emotions, our thoughts, our words, our parenting, our decisions, our relationships, our…. Everything!

  • We should start believing that we have been created on purpose, filled with a purpose, and defined by our Creator. We are who He says we are in scripture. (Be sure to download the identity booklet. We need this reminder. Click here.)

  • We should start being about our Father’s business (just as Jesus was) by walking in obedience to God’s word, accepting our gifts and talents, and pursuing to fulfill the plan God has for us.

Stay tuned. We will dig deeper into practical application in the next blog post. But in the meantime…

  1. Write out our God given purpose and keep it in front of you.

  2. Ask God to show you what you need to stop doing and what you need to start doing.

  3. Read Romans 12.

Thank you for reading this post. Together, we can live our our God given purpose! Nothing is better that being in the center of His will.

Much love to YOU!
